Francesco Sardanelli, Professor of Radiology
Professor Francesco Sardanelli was born in Genoa, Italy, in 1953. He graduated in Medicine (magna cum laude) in 1982 and completed his postgraduate studies in Radiodiagnostics (magna cum laude) at the University of Genoa, in 1986. He was a staff radiologist at the San Martino Hospital, Genoa, from 1987 to 1999, and was appointed Professor of the Postgraduation Course in Radiodiagnostics at the University of Genoa, from 1992 to 2000. Professor Sardanelli is Director of the Department of Radiology at the Research Hospital (IRCCS) Policlinico San Donato, Milan, from 2001 until today and was Professor of the Postgraduation Course in Radiodiagnostics at the University of Milan from 2001-2005. He was appointed Associate Professor of Radiology (2006-2014), continuing as Full Professor of Radiology until today at the University of Milan. He was also the Director of the Postgraduation School in Nuclear Medicine at the University of Milan (2008-2010). Since 2015, he is Director of the Postgraduation School in Radiodiagnostics at University of Milan.
Professor Sardanelli was a member of the Editorial/Advisory Board of the European Radiology from 2003-2006 and from 2012-2016. From 2013 to 2016, he was Associate Editor of Radiologia Medica. He is currently member of the editorial board of The Breast (2007-today), American Journal of Roentgenology (Assistant Editor, Womens’ Imaging Section, 2009-today) and Clinical and Translational Imaging (2014-today). From 2012 to 2016 he was a member of the editorial board of Insights into Imaging. Since 2016 he is Editor-in-Chief of the European Radiology Experimental. Moreover, he is reviewer for another 50 medical journals.
From 1999 to 2011 he was Consultant of the Istituto Superiore di Sanità for national radiological coordination of Italian multicenter studies on breast MRI screening of high-risk women. He is founder and member of the Board of Directors of European Cancer Care Certification (2010), now Breast Centres Certification. Professor Sardanelli is member of the audit team for certification of European Breast Units according to the guidelines by the European Society of Breast Cancer Specialists (EUSOMA), since 2010 until today. Furthermore, he is Member and Vice-president of the Quality Assurance Scheme Development Group, selected by the Directorate General for Health and Food Safety, European Commission Initiative on Breast Cancer.
He has been awarded honorary memberships: Royal College of Radiologists Breast Group, 2009; Iranian Society of Radiology, 2015. He has several roles in different medical societies: Member of the Research Committee of the European Society of Radiology; Member of the Advisory Board of the European Institute for Biomedical Imaging Research (EIBIR); Director of the European Network for Assessment of Imaging in Medicine, EIBIR; Past-president of the European Society of Breast Imaging and Past-president of the Italian College of Breast Radiologists by the Italian Society of Medical Radiology. He is co-author of over 1000 abstracts accepted at national and international medical meetings. He has held over 500 oral presentations, lessons, and invited lectures. Last but not least, Professor Sardanelli has published 6 books and 46 book chapters, over 350 full articles, 297 indexed by Scopus (citations 4841, h-index 35, July 18, 2017.); total impact factor 816; ORCID identifier: http://orcid.org/0000-0001-6545-9427.
